Paired with Mary’s narrative is that of Elizabeth Philpot, dispatched with her two sisters from London to the coast when their brother marries. Raised in Lyme Regis on the English coast, she’s trained by her father to spot what they call “curies” (curiosities): ammonites, belemnites, fossilized fish on the beach and embedded in cliffs that the family sells to tourists during the summer. In young Mary’s case, however, finding fossils quite simply keeps her family from the workhouse. ![]() More fact-based historical fiction from Chevalier ( Burning Bright, 2007, etc.): the vivid, rewarding tale of 19th-century fossil hunter Mary Anning.īefore Darwin’s findings rocked the world, a small group of scientists were already-in some people’s view, blasphemously-questioning the age of the Earth, the finality of God’s creation and the possibility of an ancient world before man. ![]()

Zola was a firm believer in the idea that one’s heredity, environment, and milieu greatly affects one’s identity and core values, consequently, their character and morality is immensely influenced by their upbringing, and hence, that those living in poor conditions were destined for a life of crime. Zola’s naturalist beliefs permeate the novel in his descriptions of the environment, which he utilizes to illustrate the dark side of humanity, stripping society of its false, idealistic facade, demonstrating the discordant and tragic realities of Paris. Zola is no stranger to the social injustice in Paris, he grew up witnessing the drastic contrast between the lives of the bourgeois and aristocrats with the life of the poor. The Parisian writer drew on his own personal experiences to present Victorian Paris as truthfully as possible. ![]() The 19th-century novel, ‘Therese Raquin’, was one of Emile Zola’s earliest novels to have maintained a position of merit in his canon. ![]() ![]() She is not afraid to tell people her opinion (I had such a laugh at the doctor scene), and she believes her boy and helps him out later. But it has definitely saved him, and later on is the one thing that keeps him safe. She never forced the boy anything, just gave him his space, plenty of love and hugs, and told him stories that people probably wouldn’t tell the average 8-year olds. Grandma was just the best character, next to the boy, in the book. In this book we follow a small boy and his grandma as they mourn the loss of the parents. Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology chronicles the adventures, mostly, of familiar characters: Odin, the all-father Loki, the trickster and Thor, the thunder god and original dumb jock. In particular, how I was supposed to feel about Loki, at times light-hearted and entertaining, who betrayed his family and destroyed the world? Unlike Greek mythology, there a well-defined apocalypse that pervaded every other myth, and unlike Hindu and Judeo-Christian mythology, that apocalypse involved the ultimate of triumph of evil over good. During my Elementary and Middle school years, when I voraciously consumed myths of all kinds, its moral logic never quite made sense. For me, Norse mythology has always been a hard nut to crack. ![]() ![]() Crystal Gate: Beat Halliday’s high score in Tempest, complete a Monty Python and the Holy Grail flicksync, and discover the very first video game easter egg in Adventure, the 1980 Atari game. ![]() Crystal Key: Return a mythical guitar to its altar in the world of Rush’s classic concept album, 2112.Jade Gate: Win a 3D rendering of the 1987 platformer Black Tiger.Jade Key: Win a three-dimensional rendering of the text-based adventure game Zork.Copper Gate: Complete a WarGames flicksync (more on that below).Copper Key: Defeat Acererak the Demi-Lich (Dungeons and Dragons) in a best of three round of the 1982 arcade classic Joust. In the book, those challenges are as follows: The book’s hunt required Gunters to find a key, follow the clue included with that key to a matching gate, use it to enter the gate and complete a challenge of some kind, and repeat.
